That being said, according to Dr. Nisha Jhalani, a cardiologist, using heart rate monitors found in smartwatches can actually help someone know their current fitness level based on the said organ’s beats per minute.
A typical resting heart rate of a normal person with a healthy heart is somewhere around 60-70 BPM. A person that has a resting heart rate of 80-100 may suffer from a medical condition or an invading pathogen.
Dr. Jhalani also stresses that if you go do some exercise, how quickly your body returns to base levels (meaning, base heart rate) is an indication of how healthy your heart and lungs are.
That is why if you are an active person, monitoring your heart rate is important so that you will know exactly how efficient your heart is.
Tracking Your Overall Well-Being
Aside from tracking your beats per minute, some advanced smartwatches can also track your heart rate variability as well. Whereas BPM is just a measure of your heart’s ability to pump blood, HRV is more about knowing the variation of your heartbeat.
HRV sensitivity is important because there is actually a correlation between depression and other medical conditions to it. In a 2017 study, it was found out that HRV can help doctors know if a person is suffering from any impairments in their cognitive abilities, as well as their overall medical condition.
Although not all smartwatches come with HRV monitoring, it is going to be included in more of the said devices in the near future.
